Denial Management Counseling Training

This is a live interactive training facilitated through a video/web conferencing platform.

About the 3-Day Denial Management Counseling Training

Denial is a serious problem in the treatment of addiction and coexisting personality and mental disorders.  This course will present an overview of a comprehensive clinical system for managing denial and creating intrinsic motivation for treatment.

The 3-Day Denial Management Counseling (DMC) Training instructs clinicians/counselors on the methods they can teach clients to identify and manage the denial patterns they use that prevent them from getting help for their substance use disorder. This includes the Denial Management Interaction Process, Denial Pattern Identification and Management, Presenting Problems and Denial, Brief Life and Addiction History Denial, Addiction Symptom Review, and Self-Evaluation Skills.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to deal more effectively with clients exhibiting severe denial and treatment resistance.

Training participants will be able to explain the philosophy of denial and denial management that forms the basis of Denial Management Counseling (DMC).

Training participants will be able to explain the general steps of the DMC Interactional Process designed to manage denial in here-and-now interactions with clients.

Training participants will learn how to directly deal with the twelve most common denial patterns used by addicted clients.

Training participants will learn how to implement a treatment plan for teaching client’s denial self-management training in individual, group, or psychoeducation sessions.

This training is instructor-led with most time requiring participants to be actively engaged. Training methods include brief lectures, clinical demonstrations, small group exercises, role play, and large group discussions. Training participants will leave the training with several clinical skills that can be used in their practice immediately.
